Modding Tactical Assault...the info so far...
For all you people interested in
modding Tactical Assault, this will interest you...
It seems that some people has already been looking into modding the game and
some of them has been emailing me with news and small snippets of info for all
you Tactical Assault players thinking of adding new stuff to the game...here's
what she had to say.
"The one thing that people may find as the first hurdle is the use of 'QAR'
files. From what i have been told this is the proprietary file archive format
that quicksilver has been using and from what I can see is used to help loading
times on the disks for Tactical Assault.
As far as myself and my team has seen and been told by some sources when the
game loads one of the assets it looks for it inside those QAR file first and if
it cannot find it then the game will load it directly from the disk. This means
that the QAR file is used as a sort of memory buffered file format. Now, the
first problem is when a modder like my group or others will try and modify a
file like Federation_0_0_EN.txt, the game will find the ORIGINAL version in the
basic.qar file and our sources tell us that due to this the mod will have no
effect :(
There is a kind of fix for that though :)
For the PSP side it looks like QuickSilver has left most or maybe even all of
the unarvhived assets on the UMD itself! This means that the simple solution for
you modders is the delete the .qar files and literally force the game to fall
back on the modified copy :)
Now, for the DS its more tricky and this was confirmed by our source. The DS
version due to time constraints did not have any unarchived assets on the ROM :(
It means the prospective modders will have to reverse engineer the QAR file
format first and then figure out how to rebuild them. However, from what my
modding group has seen the format is relatively simple. If only the file tool
was released though, it would make life a little more easy.
Thats it for now, if we find out anything else we will pass it on to you Vic :)
