Early January 2008 news broke that Perpetual Entertainment is no longer
developing this game, it has however been moved on to an as yet unknown
publisher.
Star Trek Online is a game in the MMO (Massivley Multiplayer Online) genre,
much like World of Warcraft the player pays a monthly fee (fee still undecided).
The game will take place in the near future of the federation after the events
of Star Trek: Nemesis and the Dominion War.
General Questions:
Will there be a beta?
There was hopes for a limited beta test of the game in the summer of 2007, but
as of yet this site hasnt heard any news about a beta, closed or otherwise
Is the game for PC only?
As is the case for most MMO games Star Trek Online will be for PC only
Is there a monthly fee?
Basically...yup
What about the game type? Will be it canon specific?
Since the game takes place in the near future (of which none has been televised)
the game itself will possobly be making canon instead of following it.
Tgere will be familliar designs to the ships and bases but it will have an
overall more "future-ish" look to it.
Will there be PvP and PvE?
As is the case of most, if not all well know MMO's there will be a mix of PvE
and PvP inside the game. However from what STG have been hearing the game
WILL be promarilly PvE based with sections of the game set aside for the PvP
apsect.
What about combat?
From what STG has seen and heard from the developers the game will be heavilly
combat focused along the same aspect lines of the Star Trek franchise itself,
ship vs ship combat will be apparent along with "away team" combat if you beam
down in the middle of large one eyed green monsters...not that we are labelling
one eyed green monsters all bad, but you get our meaning.
Wait...you said there was SHIP VS SHIP?!
Ohhh, hell yeah. The ships themselves act like mini towns and cities in
space itself, as Star Trek is primarilly set in space with the occaisional visit
to earth and other planets the player will eventually find themselves either as
part of the crew of a massive ship, or part of the crew of a smaller cruiser
class. The ship themselves are able to fight in combat (within the rules
of Starfleet i guess...but theres been no confirmation). Basically, if
you've watched an episode of Star Trek, expect aspects of that episode, and
infact the entire franchise inside the game.
The player themselves will also have their own personal ships, much like
shuttle craft, and can team up with other players to take out a space travelling
one eyed green monster...oops...theres the one eyed green monster being labelled
as bad again.
What about game learning curves and provisions for
casual players?
From what we have heard Star Trek: Online will have aspects to suit both types
of player, hardcore (never sleeps, rarely eats, always will play the game) and
the casual player (folks who actually have a life). How the types of
player will manage to play firly on a level playing ground has yet to be seen.
Ok, what about professions and classes?
Right....you have warrior, archer....ohhh...sorry, wrong MMO.
The professions in Star Trek: Online offers "departments" like science,
tactical and engineering, each of those departments have their own classes
within thos departments. The speciality skill sets are either for
shipboard use, away team use or general use. Ontop of all that there is
the leadership system. Away teams and ships do need their Lieutenants and
captains to guide the lower ranks ya know.
To be honest though, most of the profession and class system is up in the
air, the above is what has been mentioned so far.
Right, what about where we live?
Your "quarters" will be aboard a ship, the quarters itself will progress and
probably get larger as you progress through the game.
Star Trek didn't have an apparent economy, is there one
in STO?
Actually, that's not quite true, Star Trek did have several economies, the
ferengi and latinum for instance. There will be an economy system in the
game to drive commerce and trade.
What about the part of "seeking out new life" can i
explore?
Absolutely. Space exploration is one of the primary driving forces behind
the game itself
What about moving around, will i need to run
everywhere?
What...ya think this is world of warcrack or something? This is Star Trek,
we are all lazy in the future. You will be able to use transporters,
shuttle and all other kinds of lazy man travelling devices.
Can i get a ship of my own?
Surt, we will give you your own soverign class so you can warp straight to
vulcan and blow up thier planet, vulcans suck. Kidding...
You will have your own personally commioned vessel, this means that you canbe
your own one man crew aboard your cannon fodder shuttle craft or you can opt to
join a larger crew aboard a ship of the line, one of the many space born cities
in the game.
But what about the ships like the excelsior? Wont everyone want to be a
captain?
Yup, they will, which is why the leadership system has been put in place, being
a leader and a captain of a starship will take time and a lot of dedication so
you can command one of those ships. There is of course smaller clases of
vessels like the defiant and the patrol line and cruiser line of ships, the game
itself will have wide variety of canon and non cannon federation and other race
ships in the game.
Wait...you mentioned other race ships?
What, ya think the game will be nothing but smurf blue feddy scum floating
around spreading peace and love? Hell no! The area of space that the
MMO takes part in is the beta quadrant, where the romulans and klingons happen
to be. Those romulans are nasty folks ya know.
I want to be on a ship that explores the galaxy!
Tough, go play EVE. LMAO! Ok, from what we know the "spawn points" where
players start will be spread throughout the various regions of populated space,
you might start on a planet, you might start on a starbase, from what we know
the player will have a choice where their character starts and then its up to
mostly the player where he or she decides to go and venture into. IDIC and
all that stuff.
Will STO support fleets and clans?
Simple answer? Yes.
Wait, is this all their is to the STG's section on STO?
HEY! We just opened this page on the 25th of october 2007, give us a
chance :(
