An STG - HardTalk Exclusive

An interview with Leia Fortin, Lead Developer, Destiny's Wind
Destinys Wind Interview

STG

12: In the future when players gain the rank of Admiral will they be able to promote people serving on there ship?

Leia/DW

Players that reach the rank of captain can suggest a promotion for any player on there staff and then the admirals can promote the player on that request or by there own accord. Generally admirals wont promote staff on there ships but throughout Starfleet.

STG

13: If you do not manage to get into Starfleet what path will the player take in the civilian world of Destiny, and how will they be able to achieve status while not being able to access Starfleet for ranks?

Leia/DW

There will be many positions available outside of Starfleet! These include ambassadors, freighter crews, plots, artists, just to mention a few ;)

We will also have a fully working economy so I think players will all find there own niches.

14: As the game travels in full real time there will inevitably be gaps between things "happening" in the game. For role players this will be great as they can sit around in 10 forward chatting, however for the novice role-player or "n00b" to the world of MMORPE games this may be a bit daunting. What would you say to the novice gamer who might think they would feel out of place in what is generally conceived to be a full out role playing MMORPG?

Leia/DW

Well the biggest thing I can say is make friends! get to know the people around you and enjoy the fact your doing a job you've only dreamed about! yes there will be lulls but what better way then playing poker with a group of buddies or having dinner or taking courses to upgrade your knowledge for that promotion you want!

STG

15: In the world of Star Trek money on Earth is no longer used, they work to better themselves and humanity as a whole. How will people manage to gain items for there quarters on there starship, also how will a trade system be put in place with no money...will we see the Ferengi make a appearance to start the trade system off?

Leia/DW

Another great question! Well here the answer! In regards to players wealth. No money will not exist for the players per say however depending on there level of importance this will determine the amount of content a player may own and the size of there apartments/homes. A player can choose what kind of art they want on there walls or what kind of chairs, tables,
beds, etc they will have so the look will be what they want.

In regards to Ferengi yes there will be an Economy as players will earn there way through life they will get credits which will be redeemable for getting those rare items that other species will have.

STG

16: Can you expand on what the non Starfleet players will be able to do in the game?

Leia/DW

non-Starfleet players can just enjoy the lifestyle that is the federation or they can choose to be a part of the many other factions that will be present.

STG

17: In the FAQ there is talk of "factions" in the game. Can you tell us what these factions are and how they affect your standing in the game as a whole?

Leia/DW

The term factions used in the FAQ was a means to represent the different groups in the Star trek universe those being The Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Orion's, Etc.

When you create a character you can choose to be a part of these different communities. However at the launch of this game The federation will be the only selectable faction.

Now interactions amongst the factions will be determined by the players in the higher positions. So there will be peace there will be war and there will acceptance between each group.

STG

18: What stage in development is the game in right now and will you make the release date of summer 2005?

Leia/DW

We have a complete and working game engine that is in the alpha testing stage. Getting our content together for the release date is another one of our priorities, which is going to be tight to make that date because of the lack of modelers and mappers on the staff, seeing that is our only drawback I think we have done quite well for a fan based project!

STG

19: Looking to the future of Destinys Wind, what kind of plans do you have for future expansions for the game? Also, given the massive amount of content that just the first release of the game will have are you still looking for talented modellers and artists to join your team?

Leia/DW

We will be in constant growth and will always be in need of talented modelers and mappers! If any you out there feel you have what it takes visit our forums and put your applications in!

STG

20: ...and finally, as a sort of advertisement for Destinys Wind, tell us about the games major features and a little about the team members and other projects you have all worked on :)

Leia/DW

Well there are features I definitely want to keep secret ATM however we will be using a real physics engine and using Vertex shaders! there will be realistic lighting and world for the players to explore.

Players will need to have DX9 compatible video cards and at least 512MB of ram this will make sure you have an enjoyable time playing the game and have the full experience.

We have a great staff, considering the amount of time and effort you all have put into this project if it wasn't for there time effort and work I doubt we would have gotten this far!

STG would like to thank Leia for her time and wish Destinys Wind loads of success for the future. For more info on the Destiny's Wind MMORPE Project visit http://www.destinyswind.com
