Interplay hits the mark...again
After riding on the success of Star Trek 25th Anniversary, Interplay decided
to make another game that was based on the same engine and premise, sort of like
ST 25th Anniversary II.
Judgement Rites was Interplay's second foray in the world of Star Trek games
and was released under immense praise from Star Trek fans and critics alike.
Although some advances had already been made graphically wise by 1994 the game
itself still was based on the trusted engine that 25th Anniversary used the
previous year, the 2d scrollscape engine.
In all respects Judgement Rites was the same game as 25th Anniversary, the
only difference was this time around the computer can take care of the mundane
battle's if you wished. Even though the game never sold as much as it's
pre-decessor, Judgement Rites is still hailed as one of the best Trek games
published by Interplay for the trek genre.
Judgement rites was Interplays 2nd lightening strike in the same spot,
something they were not able to do again for a long long time. The game was such
a resounding success that Interplay eventually crafted a limited Collector's
Editions of Judgment Rites (same game, but with voice-overs), a Signature Series
edition of 25th Anniversary, and Star Trek: Federation Compilation, which
featured those two games plus Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Cadet Briefing (the
first four missions of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy).
IN the early days of trek gaming Interplay was the trend setter for the other
smaller game companies that were taking up trek licenses, but no other company
would see the same resounding praise and excitement that interplay got for its
first 2 games.
