Ten Ton Hammer caught up with Jack Emmert at GenCon 2008 to talk more about Star Trek Online.
To me, even over Star Wars, Star Trek space ships have always captured my imagination. Their shape is unique, it’s more distinctive to me than anything else I’ve ever seen.

Simon Pegg Says New Star Trek Movie is Going to be Huge
By GustavoLeao / 13:54, 23 August 2008 / Feature Films

Aint It Cool News posted a new interview with Star Trek actor Simon Pegg, conducted at the recent Comic Con. Here are few excerpts.

Capone: You put it out there. Tell me what you can tell me [about Star Trek]. I'm sure it will be fine with everyone involved.

SP: Ah, there's so little I can tell you. I can only say what I have seen is really, really cool. I think J.J.[Abrams] was sensible to not just come here with nothing to show the fans. I think there was a consensus that, yes, STAR TREK was going to be here this year [neither the new STAR TREK movie nor Paramount had a panel at Comic-Con this year]. And J.J. made a point of not short changing anybody by just bringing in something that wasn't finished or doing another "Here's the cast" kind of thing. And I think it's just going to serve to make the anticipation greater. When he finally is ready to show something...I mean, I've seen a little bit and I was screaming. I had my hand over my mouth "Oh my God!" It's so good. I just think it's going to be huge.

Capone: Can you give me any insight into playing Scotty and how you played him?

SP: [...] Out of respect to James Doohan, and I'm on record as saying this so this is nothing new, I just approached it as any actor would with a character. I didn't look at James; I just looked at the character and said, "Okay, he's Scottish and he works in space and he's an engineer and he's a bit of a brawler. He likes to drink. And I approached it like that. It was easy to do because it was all there in the script. I was fortunate to have Chris Doohan be my assistant in one of the scenes in one of the rooms on the Starship Enterprise. Perhaps moving things around. [laughs]

Abrams Says 'Star Trek' Worth The Wait

The visual effects of Star Trek XI will be "unbelievable", claimed J.J. Abrams while being interviewed for his new sci-fi series Fringe.

As reported by Fringe Television from an article in TV Guide, working with Leonard Nimoy was a thrill for Abrams. "...It wasn't until very recently that it really hit me how cool that was [working with Nimoy.] There was so much work to do during the shoot and there were so many fires that needed putting out that there wasn't much time to sit and acknowledge the reality of working with him. Then the other day I was watching the movie, and there he was. There was Spock! And it hit me like, 'Holy s--t-!' It was kind of like a huge delay."

Abrams was equally enthusiastic about Star Trek XI in general, from the actors to the visual effects. "...I think this movie is going to be worth the wait. It's blessed with a wonderful optimism and an incredibly alive and invested cast. While the visual effects are gonna be unbelievable, the movie is working right now with only fifty of our thousand-plus visual effects finished. It's funny, it's scary, it's dramatic, emotional and entertaining, all without having the stuff you'd think a movie called 'Star Trek' would require. That to me is exciting."

Are we getting....old?!
Posted by - Victor1st  on 22.08.08

20 years...

20...long...LONG years.

Officially on the 28th of this month I will have been part of the Star Trek gaming community for 20 years. On the 28th of August 1988 I started to get stuck in heavily into the old DOS trek games that were out for the IBM PS1 type PC's. I was 12 years old >.<

Fast forward to 1999 the first version of this site opens.

Fast forward to today the original site is now this morass of pages and videos and download and im 32 years old, overwheight with health conditions that keep popping up all the time.

I look around to see if i can find the old names i remember from the early 90'when when old BBS trek boards were around or names i can remember from 1999 whyen this site first appeared and the list of names still around is dwindling very fast.

I was in a conversation earlier on today on Skype with an old Star Trek gamer who left the trek gaming scene a long long time ago once it became apparent that Acti-LACK OF-Vision was driving the franchise firmly into the ground. He left realising that the larger sites no longer held the power they once had and the age of clans and fleets was on the decline. He was surprised that this site, and me, was still part of what he considered a long dead franchise.

With the introduction of Cryptic into the fray it makes them the 7th publisher/producer to step into the fray following the footsteps of long forgotten names in the franchise like MicroProse, Simon & Schuster, Acti-LACK OF-Vision, Interplay, Perpetual Entertainment (there was a joke of a company) and the other current holder...Bethesda.

Could it a case of "lucky 7"?

This franchise has been so mismanaged in the past and to a certain degree in the present that the old friend was really surprised Cryptic even thought of taking up the mantle of developing the cursed Star Trek Online title. With the ghost of the Activison Vs Viacom lawsuit of 2003 still leaving a bad aftertaste in people like myself who can remember those bad days it left me and the old friend wondering...whats coming next?

Star Trek gaming has now entered its 4th age, the age of Bethesda and Cryptic. This will probably be the last "regeneration" of Star Trek gaming that I will see cause lets be honest folks, if Star Trek Online fails...it spells the end of AAA big budget titles. As i remember those old names of the Star Trek gaming world from the last 2 decades and wonder what they are doing thesedays the though switches to...what the heck am I still doing here?

Folks have said that if this site closes it would be similar to the Ravens of the Tower of London leaving, the universe would implode and general nasty stuff like that.

As I look around to what i recognize as the new "big names" of Star Trek gaming posting in the general forums I feel like the old grandfather of the community, sitting back in this rocking chair, pipe in his mouth, shaking his head at all the young whippersnappers thinking to himself that they just don't realise what a change in the generational aspect of this gaming franchise actually means.

I was there during the first 3 changes...thats probably what makes me feel old stick out tongue

Pegg On Hollywood Celebrity

Keeping one's feet firmly on the ground helps one avoid problems when an actor finds celebrity.
As reported by Sci Fi Pulse, from a article in the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Simon Pegg finds that using a bit of common sense is essential in surviving Hollywood and fame. "I understand how you can change," he explained, "but as long as you always appreciate that it's a facile thing, then you'll stay on top of it. You want to continue to work and you want to continue to work with the best people and inevitably you sort of move up and start working on bigger films and it's very difficult to say, 'I'd better not do that because it will make me famous.'"
Being recognized as a Star Trek XI actor has its own difficulties. Pegg is required to keep quiet about the movie due to the strict secrecy demanded by Paramount. "I have a Paramount bomb injected into my neck so if I mention anything to do with it, it will explode!" he said when asked about the movie. "I've never been on any film that's so secretive. I had to travel to set in a covered golf buggy wearing a cloak so you couldn't see my uniform. Somebody got a shot of Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, so after that it was just lockdown."

Old Shatner Unrecognizable To Current Shatner

By T'Bonz

Looking back on his work on the original series is a bit off-putting to the seventy-seven-year-old William Shatner.
As reported by The Times-South Africa, the young man of the 1960s is a stranger to Shatner. "He’s a complete stranger," said Shatner. "Not only is he physically foreign, emotionally I don’t know where I was at that time. There's also a certain amount of revulsion involved. How could I have looked that young? What happened? I should have taken more vitamins. It's totally science-fictional."
Shatner has always lived life to the fullest, engaging in various adventurous activities ranging from flying a stunt plane to racing a car. He offers this advice for enjoying the experience, whatever it may be. "In striving to experience things, you may be rushing the experience. That carries with it the seeds of its own displeasure, and you have to guard against that."

Fontana On 'Star Trek: Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment'

Whether working on Star Trek for television or comics, the emphasis is on the human story for Dorothy Fontana.
As reported by Ign.com, working on a comic means greater freedom of expression. "...Anything can be drawn," explained Fontana. "So any sort of situation or alien or creature or, you know...that can all be put down on the page, where we could not have done it at the time with the technology available to us. That was why the animated series had pluses even thought it was stories that were shorter in length, simpler stories, really basically one main plotline and maybe a possible small subplot. But we could do anything, because you could draw it."
That doesn't mean that the ability to draw more exotic characters and scenes takes away from the heart of Star Trek, the story. "I think we always geared our stories to the human element," said Fontana. "We were always telling stories for people to enjoy. Gene Roddenberry always used to say if you're not writing for other human beings, who are you writing for?! So we always kept that in mind, but the fact [is] that for instance in the animated series and in the comic book you can go underwater to an underwater world [and] you can have all sorts of creatures and aliens. In the animated series we had Larry Niven's Kzinti, the big cats. And that's the sort of thing that could easily be done [with drawings], but not be as easily done with the technology we had."

Star Trek News Bullets

August 16, 2008 - 2:20 AM
IO9 reports that building a toy Enterprise is not as easy as one would think. Sculptors at Art Asylum shared emails sent back and forth with their production factory, in which they discussed various elements of their work. "Windows and some details in general seem sloppy please make sure in final product windows and details are straight and uniform," said one email. Another was critical of some elements, saying "Scribe lines on prototype in general are too wide, thick and sometimes very sloppy make finer and thinner. I can even see where the drill bit for the CNC machine slipped. This is not acceptable."
Portraying a Romulan means perfecting a new made-up language, according to Clifton Collins Jr., who is one of the Romulans in the forthcoming Star Trek XI as reported by E! Online. "Me and Eric [Bana] are the new Romulans," said Collins. "They had a linguist come in and invent Romulan!" Collins went on to describe the Romulan look. "We're space pirates,", said Collins. "Think of Johnny Depp as a Romulan." Collins also hinted at surprise appearances in Star Trek XI, saying "There is, but I better not say. There are certain things that as kids growing up, whether it's Star Trek or other shows at the time, all you got to do is really just hear their voice and your heart warms."

You are in command. As the Captain, it is up to you to make the best decisions for your crew. With a multitude of paths to choose from, you will decide the direction and ultimate outcome of your campaign.

Actor Don S. Davis (General Hammond) dies

BRITISH COLUMBIA - Don Sinclair Davis, a B.C. actor best known for his recurring role on the TV show Stargate SG-1, died of a heart attack Sunday morning at his home in Gibsons. He was 65.

"He had a massive heart attack," said Gail Wilson, a friend who lives just down the street from Davis. "The ambulances came [and] I know they tried to resuscitate him in the driveway and couldn't."

Wilson said Davis had had heart problems for years and suffered from diabetes.

Davis leaves behind his wife Ruby Fleming-Davis, who he married in 2003, and a son from a previous marriage.

Davis, who had a PhD in theatre, was born and raised in Missouri and began acting in the early 1980s while teaching at the University of British Columbia. In 1987, he gave up teaching to act full time.

Davis served three years in the army in the 1960s and two of his best-known TV roles were playing military men: General George Hammond in Stargate SG-1 and Major Garland Briggs in Twin Peaks.

Phil Hayes, a friend of Davis' who lives in Los Angeles, said Davis was "very talented" but also very modest.

"He was fantastic, very self-effacing," said Hayes. "He wouldn't take a compliment."

He was also an artist - a skill Hayes said Davis first picked up doing set design - and he had recently begun promoting his paintings and sculptures online.
