From Webster, there are two specific sets of nouns defining diet:

1 a: food and drink regularly provided or consumed b: habitual nourishment c: the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason d: a regimen of eating and drinking sparingly so as to reduce one's weight <going>
2: something provided or experienced repeatedly (a diet of Broadway shows and nightclubs — Frederick Wyatt) the real ultimate power

1 : a formal deliberative assembly of princes or estates
2 : any of various national or provincial legislatures

I suppose watching too much TV isn't a good way of living life for me.
If you feel otherwise, may I suggest a good distant from your TV set?

What Age did not point out is that English itself is the product of a bunch of other languages. Words are like money. both are virtual in nature. You use it, it gets damaged while the worth of it changes according to how people evaluate it. Eventually you print new ones to replace the obsolete.

Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll is a great book.

question question question

Its okay for English mothers to mis-use Greek for her children and call it English
but not so for American mothers to mis-use English and call it American English?

Of course it does matter, because it goes both ways.

That's called cultural exchange.

If it is practised one way, it is practise the other way.

Cause most of the time I open up the dictionary -- Ocford one, I get a bunch of greek thrown at me to explain where/how the words are rooted...

Actually "English" as we speak it today has many words that are from other languages, pick up any English dictionary and start looking at the origin of the words you will be amazed. Then get an old english dictionary and wowser..

Gray is right though as it is more Germanic and Norse as well. This makes up for most of the population of the UK as Celts came from Gaul before the Romans settled in what was called Britannia. Then came the Anglo and Saxons tripes from what is known today as Germany as well as the Norse.

Besides which, a language is far more then just a few words - its how they are used, and the order in which they are used - which as said previously descends from Germanic languages.

Fact being that English is a living language.
As such, it iis subjected to alterations made by people of different origins around the world.

Post subject:

agreed there are differences between regions

k to keep this simple let's play a simple game
name the one thing that doesn't fit in the line

US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand

and yes the answer is US

you see, in all other countries colonised by the English the language has changed as well (mostly in pronunciation and popular words as slang)

but word wise all those regional forms of English still use spelling rules as used in Britain (common examples 'ou' in colour, 'll' in full)

and Americans have drifted off far more than those others

now where as I know one could say that the degree of changes does not matter
I'd disagree, you see words change in meaning, new words appear, popular words change
however the common rules of spelling and grammar remain mostly unchanged

Obviously you made a seemingly good argument with principle and theory in mind.
However, you are still trying to ignore how words have changed over thousands of years.

English isn't a changing language, so much as a growing language - the biggest language on the planet in fact (speaking in terms of content).
If you made a dictionary in small print, put it on A4 sized sheets that were tissue-paper in thickness....then it would be well over 5ft thick.....
The current dictionaries you see are simply "common" excerpts ...
Words do not become defunct with age (certainly in English anyway) - But I won't join the argument as to why....

All 12 regional dialects of English are still as valid today as they were when they first came about, and in fact if you go to certain regions of the UK they are still in effect - Cornwall actually still has its own form of English that goes back before the merging of the dialects (~600years ago) - and is classified by some as a completely different language (including the US government). This is the same in areas of Suffolk, Norfolk and a few places up North....I myself speak a Suffolk dialect every now and then (basically when I lapse and don't articulate to "modern English") (next to no-one understands it outside of Suffolk which can make things "fun" every now and then)- which is stemmed from East Angle. This predates Shakespeare and all the "flowery" language of the era (Thou art and such is liable to a Londinion dialect and is post-merging of dialects)

^ This is why scientific terminology is Greek or Latin in basis - they do not change (being dead languages), because of this a large quantity of scientific language can either be directly or closely derived from these languages....

Post subject:

To clarify:

Usage of "art thou" is to show how it differs from its modern day counterpart "are you".
They constitute a "move from one to another".

My reference to William Shakespeare included Bard
Like the rest of my examples, all have much older physical origins than the merging of your dialects.
Those physical evidences are there for you to see and talk about in your language / dialects.
That is if you chose not to ignore them.

So let's take a closer look at your message instead:

English isn't a changing language, so much as a growing language...
The current dictionaries you see are simply "common" excerpts ...
... and in fact if you go to certain regions of the UK they are still in effect
... that goes back before the merging of the dialects (~600years ago)
.I myself speak a Suffolk dialect every now and then ...next to no-one understands it outside of Suffolk...

Those are your words, I just removed some of the parts to make a simpler read:

According to the online version of the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:
change
• verb 1 make or become different. 2 exchange for another. 3 move from one to (another). 4 ...

What you said ain't strong statements, so much as weak confessions --
with emphasis on the word change as explained by one version of the
beloved Oxford dictionary.

To say that English is a growing language; and
Refused to acknowledge "diet" as expanded by an American dictionary; and
To not accept the Oxford reference to the Greek base
Makes me question...

Are you quite sane? stick out tongue
