How would Direct x 10 play in older Star Trek games or would it be best to stick with XP and direct x90c?

To be honest, I wouldn't take the risk.....Just partition your HD, stick Vista and 10 on one...XP and 9 on the other......I've had several games that are barely a year old utterly fail to work with Vista (and please don't start giving lectures on setting up compatibility settings...) So I don't see it getting better for even older ones.....

I would recommend not using DX10 or Vista at all, especially with all the flaws built into it.

I have not tried to partition a harddrive with Vista... as of right now I am not sure it is even possible with how Vista installs itsself on a harddrive, but normally if I were doing it with XP I would put the cd in and load up my computer form the CD, go to the menu on the CD and go from there.

You can partition with Vista - laptop im using now is.
When you go to install, change the amount of space you use to whatever you want. If you ca install XP first from there in the usual way.
Then install Vista on the other part of the HD. From there you will need to download the boot manager for Vista - install that and run it.
Restart your comp and it will ask you which copy of windows to boot. - It will do that every time you boot up. Each time, just highlight whichever system it is, and you are away!

on motherboards from 2001 and to date, there is a boot option installed in the bios chip that allows you to choose which drive you desire to use.

Best bet is to install a second hard drive and make it win xp and the other win vista.
when you boot your pc, at startup tap either the F5, F8 button or F11, or whatever button it is that allows the boot option menu to appear and a boot option dos window will apper, select whatever drive you have with the OS you so dsire, and Voila!!!!

its easier and safer to do it this way, then to try and partition your HDD and screw things up.
