That's quite an interesting thing,
in English English, the name "Gray" is with an "a" (old English spelling)...however the colour is with an "e" ("new" English spelling).........the two diverged only a few hundred years ago, which (if I have my timeline about right) would put the use of "a" around the time the Americas were colonised which in turn would explain the difference in spelling....still odd "a" is used in the spelling of the name.....catches a few people out stick out tongue
