I really don't like the fact that is't going to be pay for play. And how much is really known about it so far?

I know I wont be playing it, I don't play pay to pay games simply due to that very concept.

I honestly have little faith in the gaming making it to light.   It just seems to be lacking all the stuff that made the other MMORPG so good.  You can not capitain a star ship or have one.   It pay to play and it comminty base will be releitivly small so that will hurt it.

Plus it seems like another rip of of the trek name.  I may look into in a few years when it comes out since it will be close to the time I am done with collage so I may if I am lucky to final have some free time from school

As vic mentioned to Harry Lang, this board is one of the few boards where there is a lot of scepticism about the new MMORPG.  Interestingly enough this board and the board previously had almost 90% of the regular posters as regular online gamers of the trek games.  Probably why a lot of the other online trek game fan based sites dont like the STGD cause of the scepticism about the new MMORPG.

The MMORPG has shown very little so far to be positive about..............

Also alot of people liked the tactical ship combat concept........take this aspect away from Trek and you loose alot. But hey,if you wanna screw your current playerbase for hoped for legions of kids wantin to a "Trek game",go ahead!
Paramount and Acyivision both have done little or nothing to impress me as Corporations providing a product.

Im sceptical my sticking points are:

- Can only play federation
- Poor PvP = ITs limited to the holodeck

Other factions and faction pvp will come out in an expansion IF there is one.

Those two^^ alone piss me off. Hopefully, hopefully holodeck will be a type of 'arena' like GuildWars has.

Pay2play is getting more popular by the day and by 2007 im betting alot more non mmos will charge you to play online...

For one thing, how do you know this? The game is soo far from release you can't make any firm judgements like that. Besides, who's to say you can't play other races too? We'll just have to wait and see when the game gets closer to finished

Devs posts..duh :/

PvP will be actively encouraged in the Holodeck. PvP in "Real Life" between ships or on the ground will only be available post-launch. Probably in an expansion.

All the details about if its realm v realm or a free for all or whatever will be determined while we're working on the expansion. Being able to use the holodeck for testing various things should be helpful though.

Right now its all guess work......

I tried Asheron's Call.....liked it,played acouple months and it was too repetitive. Tried it again after expansion came out.....same as before..........

      Tried EverQuest.........again burnout...........

DarkAge of camelot......fun again for awhile then burnout.........

Pattern here.............have fun with WoW for 3-4 months and then we'll see you all again..............

Once theis Trek game showsup......same will probably happen.........but goahead and try it....

As pointed out...lack of PvP will be a drawback for a segment of the gaming population...

But they must be shooting for some specific demographic they think they have touched on....or else they wouldnt even develope it...

The advisory board was suppossed to provide input on making the proposed concept better....not necessarily rewrite the game concept to appeal to a current demographic...

Much as many SFC fans wanted SFC3 to be something of a more logical progression from SFC2...and were very vocal about it (including myself)...many current gamers are looking at the new concept with disdain....because the game wont appeal to them...

I know I wont be getting it...as it doesnt appeal to me....doesnt mean I have to trash it...or those producing it...

Well to those who would be so utterly negative......I would say..." Dont trash another man's Trek"...

This will appeal to lots of people.....

I look at it this way...more succesful titles means the better chance they will get around to my demographic.....a war gamer...

And even if they dont bring out a game we really fawn over.....it doesnt mean we have to abandon those games we still love and play...

SFC is still going strong....The server kit code is being improved...Quicksilver has committed to releasing a Q3 editor....and latest word on ETA for OP source code is as ealry as this christmas...

Games only die if we let them...not because someone posted "Trek gaming is dead"...no matter how many times they post it... sly wink

Trek gaming is NOT dead...."you can have my OP CD when you can pry it out my cold, dead CD ROM" :drunk

I'm trashing Paramount and activision...because they combined ruined a genre of games i came to really love.......and thats my opinion and perogative..if you want to defend either of those companies go ahead......but I think they both SUCK.....

Infact I find the whole "lawsuit" issue when you take a look at what led to it and what was "initially" wanted as so much garbage now....with only the lawyers making any money on it. Paramount was foolish in their treatment of the "cash cow" they thought they had.......and Activision was singularly lacking in the "vision" part of their name in a number of the games they produced...Dominion Wars being foremost in mind.
From Bridge Cmdr to SFC3....the lack of support they offered simply shot themselves in the foot! They could of made more money from this genre but choose to try the quick buck method and helped to burn themselves. Who was the big looser? All of us that like the Star trek genre games!
Who cares about it? Not Activision or paramount..........

Is that why I trash them...............YES

Will I continue to do so..........probably

Does anyone have to read it.........No

          And there we are........

I doubt seriously there's only gonna be PvP battles in a Holodeck. That's ridiculous. What's the point of the game if not to fight? I personnaly think that's a stupid accusation by someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.

Uh..Mitch is on the Dev team....that's right from perpetual...

PvP in holo deck only on release....and probably ship to ship in an expansion...

But like I said...not everyones trek is the same....I've gotten in serious disagreements with several treks fans over SFC even being "Trek'...they felt it was an aboration rather than part of the Trek universe...

Pushing a broom on a starship isnt my idea of fun....but neither is hours of mindless Sim action....people buy that stuff and play it...so what do I know?

Ok..Straight from the Horses mouth (link might not work..havnt checked)

Quote:
Now now, you early game bashers take a break.
We all realize that three factions would be better than one, but there is a matter of execution. All of us at perpetual feel that the current crop of MMOs are like wierd snapshots of life, rather than actual changing universes. But, We don't have the time to make a deep game for three factions at once. Its just plain too much work for how much time we are giving ourselves.

Thus, we've made the decision to make a deep and interesting federation game that has a story that clearly leads into a large multi-faction conflict for the late-game. We felt that it would be a much better game than a large jumbled no-depth game that is frozen in time like those that currently exist.
Some people are going to be dissapointed, we realize that.
But,we are not making a copy of other MMOs, its going to be very different, so I ask that you throw a few of your assumptions out the window.

- Mitch

So from now on presume that there is no faction or realm PvP, also assume to play a federation species...
