As reported here a couple of days ago on the front page ( http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~startrekgd/forum/viewtopic.php?t=348 ) the old problem of fleet tag's reared its head again. Back in the old days this sort of thing rarelyhappened but as we creep further into 2005 its happened 9 times already. STG managed to speak to the other 8 fleets who done it, and we are usually able to, until 2 days ago.
http://www.trek-online.com ran by the same folks who maintain NDF mod for SFC 3 has posted about this on there front page as well...

Quote: It seems that these days anyone can start a group, call themselves a Fleet, Clan, Guild, or whatever and take a name without doing some research before hand.
I remember back about 5 or 6 years ago if you "borrowed" another Clan's tag without being a member of that Clan you were in for some real trouble, not only would you be ran out of any game room you would more than likely have to change your IP, name, and move to another state to keep people from tormenting you.
And if you started a Clan using someone else's Tag it mean WAR. Not only in the game arena, but your forums, your website, your friends forums, game lobby, everywhere they could find you and your cronies hanging out.
What has happened now? People seem to do what they want without the gaming political ramifications even being worried about. I mean back in the day if you stepped out of line it meant WAR. Gamers would beat their chest, their friend’s chest, and your chest just for coming in the wrong room let alone trying to copy their Clan Tag.
The UFP commanded by John Hathaway has been a Clan in existence for over 3 years now; they like other Clans have been forced to play other games more often since the Activision Paramount fiasco. Truthfully I think it is good for a clan to play more than one type of game, it gives the clan more character and shows how they, a group of friends come together for fun and enjoy each others company whether playing Trek or not.
Apparently another group now calling them the UFP has knowingly used the UFP Clan Tag. The first UFP is located @ http://www.ufplanets.com this new second group has copied the original clan so close their website is called http://www.ufplanets.org kind of like a parallel universe clan or something.
You would think that the leaders of this Clan would have at least contacted the first UFP and discussed it with them first. Or at the very least conducted some sort of search to see if the name UFP was in use before starting their Clan and naming it the UFP using the exact website name.
This of course will need some farther investigation into the subject and circumstances, I am asking for a joint session of the United Nations Of Clans to address this matter so we can investigate and see if we can come to a compromise between the two Clans.
Trek-Online.com is inviting both UFP Clan Leaders to a summit to be held on a neutral teamspeak (Trek-Online's TS) so we can try to hash the differences and come to an honorable resolution that both sides can live with.
I will be posting on both UFP forums since we have been asked to intervene and set up the times, I would also ask that representatives from both clans and the UNOC post any ideas they have in this thread.
We will also be setting up a private set of forums here at Trek-Online.com where both parties can discuss this matter in private within a neutral setting.
More News as it develops.
They already knew the old UFP existed as was discovered by Katherine in the MSN convo she had with 2 of there leaders, but as the old UFP was deemed "inactive" they took the tags and name anyway.
As i said in the news post on the front page, this reopens pandoras box. |
